National Merit Semifinalist News

Congratulations to the 21 National Merit Semifinalists at Walnut Hills High School. Walnut has the most semifinalists of any high school in the state of Ohio.

Walnut Hills Principal Jeff Brokamp attributed the students' success to several factors: smart kids motivated to work hard, teachers who are top in their content area, a rigorous curriculum and supportive parents.

"The biggest thing is the curriculum we have here. Ten years ago, we made it part of our long-range plan that every student would be 'pushed' to take advanced placement classes," Brokamp said.

"Last year, all but two or three students in the senior class had taken at least one AP course. When you get students participating in AP courses it raises the bar, raises their achievement and bears itself out in tests like the PSAT."

College Information Center

There are reasons for students in ALL grades to visit the College Information Center, Room 218. The college application season for the Class of 2012 is right around the corner. It is time to start planning applications and drafting essays; the staff and CIC volunteers are great organizers and editors!

Any senior who is taking a fall SAT or ACT should immediately contact the CIC for practice, and all students in grades 9-11 will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, Oct. 12. This is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test for juniors as well as essential practice for the admissions testing to follow in the winter. PSAT/SAT-ACT preparation instruction soon will begin in earnest. Mrs. Geller, Mrs. Restle and their wonderful parent volunteers love working with students in all grades on Word of the Day and the math puzzles.

The CIC is open Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Students are welcome to take advantage of its services during study halls, lunches and after school.

Message from the Principal:  College entrance Results

I would like to share with all of you great news regarding our college entrance results for last year's Junior and Senior classes.

First, our Junior class from last year recorded the highest total of National Merit Semi-finalists of any high school in Southwest Ohio. This is an impressive accomplishment of which we all share responsibility.

Our Senior class from last year recorded record high average scores on the SAT. In Critical Reading, the average score rose from 593 to 607. In Mathematics the average score rose from 582 to 594 and in Writing the average score rose from 565 to 572.

The national composite average for the three tests was 1509, Walnut Hills' average was 1773.

Much congratulations goes to the entire teaching faculty. Also, let's not forget the great work done by the ladies in the College Information Center.

On this note, I would like to spread the "Word of the Day" lists to every classroom and office door this year. Reading is the fundamental element to every subject and the mastery of vocabulary is a prime reason for the dramatic increase in reading scores.

Our work is far from done. I believe that we have only begun to see the outer rings of our potential. In school year 2007-2008, 22 tenth grade students scored 180 or better (a benchmark score for potential national merit finalists) on the PSAT selection index. In 2008-2009, that number rose to 38. This past year the number rose again to 48 students. Rest assured that there are specific actions which cause such a rise. First and foremost, quality instruction. Also, overt attention to power standards within the scope of the test instrument brings about improved scores. This is where the work of the CIC comes in to play. Thanks for your support of the CIC initiatives and congratulations for all you do to bring about success for our students.

Principal, Walnut Hills High School
