2018-2019 Cappies Critic Team Applications

The WHHS Theatre Department is currently taking applications for our 2018-2019 critic team.

WHAT IS CAPPIES?

The Cappies is an organization of high schools in the Greater Cincinnati area (and internationally) that celebrate and promote excellence in theatre, journalism, and writing.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE CRITIC?

Members of the critic team are responsible for seeing at least five shows throughout the entire school year (October-April) at other participating high schools. One member of the team is designated as the Lead Critic, who has more responsibilities (scheduling, assisting with the school Cappies show, signing up for shows to review, coordinating voting, etc.) After seeing the shows and participating in discussions with other student critics and adult mentors, critics then write reviews that have the chance of getting published on Cincinnati.com. At the end of the year, critics also cast votes for the awards gala. In addition, there are awards for best critic team, best male critic, best female critic, up and coming critic (best first year critic), and best review…so you can actually win an award for your writing!

WHAT DO I NEED TO BE A CAPPIES CRITIC?

-A love of theatre, writing, and journalism

-A computer or other device with internet access

-Reliable transportation

-A positive attitude

-The ability to turn things in ON TIME!

DOES IT COST MONEY?

No. The Theatre Department pays all participation fees for the Cappies program (Note: this does NOT include Gala tickets). It is completely free. Plus, when you go see shows, your host schools feed you! However, because it is free, we ask that you honor this year-long commitment.

SO WAIT…I GET TO DO SOMETHING I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT, IT DOESN’T COST ANY MONEY, AND I GET FREE FOOD WHEN I GO SEE SHOWS?

Yeah, pretty much.

HOW DO I BECOME A CRITIC?

Complete the online application by Monday, August 27th. The team can have up to nine critics. The team will be announced on Wednesday, August 29 and a mandatory meeting will be held for all participating critics after school on Tuesday, September 11 in room 2510 from 2:45-3:15. Critics must also attend the Cappies Program Critic Training. This will be Saturday, September 29- Time and location TBA. If you cannot make this training, then you must attend make-up training. If you do not attend training, you cannot be a critic.
