Walnut Hills Option Process

The Walnut Hills SchoolThe Walnut Hills High School Option Process involves the student and parent selection of courses for the next academic school year. This process occurs during the months of January and February each year.

The Walnut Hills Counselors meet with students during their English classes where they will receive the following information:
  • Walnut Hills High School Curriculum Guide
  • Student option form where students will list their course selection for next year. Students who misplace or need another option form can obtain one in the counseling office.
  • Option process instruction sheet
  • AP Alert meeting calendar. This calendar lists has the dates and times when the AP teachers will meet with students to explain their AP courses and distribute any approval information
  • Course approval form, which lists all courses which require a teacher approval and signature.

In January the Walnut Hills AP Teachers will host a student AP Fair in the student lunchroom. All students in grades 7-11 are invited to attend the fair during their lunchtime. Walnut Hills students who are currently in AP classes and the AP Teachers meet to provide information about their AP course and answer any questions from students.

Also in January, Walnut Hills AP Teachers will host a student AP Fair for Parents during the evening to provide information about their AP course and answer any questions from parents.

Students in grades 8-11 have the opportunity to select courses for the next academic year by logging onto Power School and selecting their courses into the computer. Students must also complete a paper option course selection form which will compliment the courses they select in the computer. Students must option the required signatures of teachers for all AP, AA, and special teacher approved courses on the paper option form. Students and parents must sign the paper option form. When the student has completed their paper option form, the student will submit their form to their English teacher on the due date in the middle of February.

WHHS PowerSchool Instructions for Optioning

  1. Log onto PowerSchool by visiting https://powerschool.cps-k12.org/public/
  2. Use your PowerSchool login and password to get to your account.
  3. Click on the icon named “Class Registration” which is located second from the bottom on the left side column.
  4. Click the edit button with the icon of a pencil to request a course.
  5. You will see a screen like this. Click inside the blank square to request a course like the example below with English 11AA. Then click the “blue Okay” area in the bottom right of the page.
  6. When you are completely finished with selecting all your courses, click the “submit” button on bottom right side of the page.
  7. If you cannot enter some classes, please make sure these classes you could not enter are listed on your option sheet. Your counselor will hand enter them into the computer.
  8. If you have any problems with the option process, please email or call your counselor.
