Walnut Hills Athletics: As Strong As Ever, Even in the Face of District Budget Cuts

We want you to know that with the help of the Alumni Foundation, the Parent Board, and you, our parents, Walnut Hills will not take a step backwards and will continue to offer the best and largest athletic program in the area.

As you may have heard, in just the last few weeks the Cincinnati Public School District has informed us that they are cutting $1.1 million from extracurriculars as part of $20 million in budget cuts for this school year. Walnut Hill extracurriculars, including athletics, have been cut approximately $100,000 - a 47% cut.

With a commitment from our parents and coaches, we will keep every coaching position and every team at full strength.

We have already produced a plan to secure the entire $100,000. The Walnut Plan involves 1) large, targeted fund raising events by the Parent Board, 2) fund raising by the Alumni Foundation, and 3) the commitment and involvement of our parents thru a very do-able and modest pay-to-participate and their involvement with the Parent Board and Athletic Boosters fundraising events, including Booster memberships, Walnut Fest, the Plant Sale, and other such activities.

Here are the details of the Plan as it will be printed in the Student Handbook:
“Pay to Participate in Athletics
A fee is charged by Walnut Hills to help offset some of the costs of providing a comprehensive extra-curricular program. This fee will be paid by everyone who makes a team; there is no fee to tryout for a team. You should contact the Athletic Director if a hardship affects your ability to pay. A separate fee is charged for each team you make. For example, if you make the tennis and swim teams, you pay two fees; however, if you make the high school basketball team and the coach moves you between varsity and JV, you pay one fee. This is not a pay to play fee. The fee must be paid one week before the first official contest of each season. Once this deadline has passed, a player will not be able to practice or play until the fee is paid. The fee is $30 for participation in a junior high school sport and $60 for participation in a high school sport. Fees are nonrefundable and are not prorated. All checks should be made payable to the “Walnut Hills Athletics” and put “Pay to Participate” on the check. Payment can also be made by credit card, but American Express cannot be accepted. Parents and players will also participate in Parent Board fundraisers, team fundraisers, and Athletic Boosters fundraisers, such as Booster memberships, Walnut Fest, and the Flower Sale.”

How does the amount of this “pay to participate” compare with other schools or activities? Recreational SAY soccer costs $50 for 6th and 7th grade and $65 for 8th thru 12th grade. A survey of some of the top schools in the East Division of our league found pay to participate fees of $140, $140, $175 and $100 per HS sport and $100 per JH sport.

I hear that there is money being spent on a mental toughness program for 7th grade football, what about that money? The Student Activities Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization that helps all CPS schools, has independently secured a $15,000 grant for this unique pilot program and offered it to Walnut Hills. The company putting this pilot project on was interested in working with one team to see if it would impact student retention. This program was created and funding efforts were begun even before the District announced these cuts in extracurriculars. These dollars are not connected to the District’s money or the money being cut by the District. They are raised from private sources who are giving the money for this specific project and it cannot be used for any other purpose.

Thank you for the commitment to make the Walnut Hills athletic program work.

Walnut Hills Says Farewell to Track Legend, Coach Karl Kauffman

Beloved Coach Karl Kauffman has tendered his resignation as the head coach of the women's track and field program. Coach Kauffman has lead the Lady Eagles for more than 20 years. In that time his runners have won national, state, and league championships and gained All American status. Most recently his Lady Eagles were 2010 Regional Champions. Coach Kauffman has been the Enquirer's Division I Coach of the Year in two of the last three years. We will miss Coach Karl. Athletic Director Tom Donnelly said, "It has been a highlight of my time at Walnut Hills to work with him and see him mold runners, teams, and women of character. We wish him the best. Walnut Hills will continue the excellence its has attained at the junior high and high school levels and begin the process of securing a great high school track coach."
