Standardized Testing FAQ

Should I take the ACT or SAT?

Take both. Before the end of the eleventh grade, you should have taken each test at least once. (December for the ACT and May for the SAT). On those test dates, you can order both the test booklet and answer sheet returned to you for review. Studies indicate that students generally do better on one than the other, but the only way to tell is to take them both and compare the results (Concordance chart).  In your senior year, you can retake both or concentrate on the one that indicates a higher score.  Take the SAT II’s right after you have finished the relevant coursework.

How many times should I take each test?

Discuss this with Mrs. Geller in the CIC and your counselor.  There are many factors that go into how many times you test. The SAT will send all your scores in, and the colleges will generally combine the best scores. The ACT will send whatever test date you wish.  Each college views the test scores in different ways and as a part of your overall application.

How many SAT IIs should I take?

Most colleges that require the SAT II require three tests, generally, Writing, Math IC or IIC and one other of your choice.  Be sure to read the requirements from schools that interest you.  Take them early so you have the option to take them again and improve your score if needed.
