SAT, ACT, PSAT & PLAN Test Information

Entrance examinations are an important part of the college-bound process.  Therefore, all Walnut Hills juniors should take both the SAT and the ACT at least once.  Universities do not require students to submit both SAT and ACT scores.  However, because the tests - and students - differ considerably, score percentiles might be higher on one or the other!

SAT and ACT registration forms and fee waivers are available in the counselors’ office.  Mailed registration forms must be postmarked by midnight of the dates listed above. Students may register online for the SAT at http://www.collegeboard.com  and for the ACT at http://www.act.org

 ACT

The ACT assesses high school students’ general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work.  The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The Writing Test, which is optional, but required by most colleges, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay.  The test is administered in one session of three hours and thirty minutes including the essay.

October 22 is the first ACT test date for Ohio and the application deadline is September 16.  Register now either using the paper form available in the Counselors’ Office or in the CIC or online at http://www.act.org.

SAT

The SAT Reasoning Test measures critical thinking skills students need for academic success in college.  Primarily in multiple-choice format, the three sections of the SAT are Critical Reading, Math and Writing.  The mandatory essay is always the first section of the three-hour and forty-five minute testing session.  The SAT Subject Tests are one-hour tests in specific subjects measuring knowledge of particular subjects and the ability to apply that knowledge.  Many universities require or recommend one or more of these tests for admission or for placement - determine the requirements of colleges under consideration.  October 1 is the first national SAT test date and the registration deadline is September 9.  Register now using either the paper form available in the counselors’ office or in the CIC or online at http://www.collegeboard.com.
