Making Contact With Colleges FAQ

Should I visit a school before I apply or wait to see if I am accepted?

Students and families should utilize summers and holiday breaks to visit college campuses. Visiting a campus and meeting students, faculty and admissions officers gives a better feel for the college. During a visit, you can deicide whether you would feel comfortable in that environment.  (See section on college visits).  Often, you can stay in a dorm overnight with prior arrangements. Students who are accepted are often invited to come for a visit, or you can return during spring of your senior year prior to making a final decision.

When should I start to see college representatives?

During the fall of each year, we host about 100 colleges at school.  Schools visit during the third bell lunch hour (11:15-11:45). Visits are held in the Conference Room.  Juniors and seniors are encouraged to visit. The schedule is posted in the daily bulletin, in the glass case outside the Counseling Office and on our calendar site.  The representatives that visit our school are generally the area representatives that later read applications. Feel free to ask questions and introduce yourself.

Are interviews required?

Some colleges still require an interview as an additional tool to use in selecting applicants for their school.  An interview may be conducted on campus with an admissions officer or locally by alumni.  An interview is an opportunity to offer details about your academics and activities as well as ask questions.
