Walnut Hills High School Long Range Goals 2002 - 2007

The Long Range Plan will serve both as the school's One Plan and the background for the North Central Association's School Improvement Endorsement. Over the next five yews goals in the curriculum and teaching areas will be handled by the ILT. Goals in the Facility Enhancement and Marketing areas will be bandied by constituent committees and will report to the MT. Goals in the support services will be the responsibility of the guidance department and will report to the ILT. Progress will be reported to the LSDMC twice each school year.

CURRICULUM GOALS:

  1. Strengthen the AP Program by adding additional AP courses, expanding clientele, and increasing vertical communication among feeder classes,

  2. Ensure that all courses contain the challenge necessary for superior college preparation.

  3. Provide a better teaming environment by improving the teacher-student ratio.

  4. Continually select and purchase textbooks, classroom equipment and materials to ensure that academic needs are met.

  5. Provide common curricular experiences and evaluation within individual courses that prepare students to meet or exceed established state, district, and WHHS standards.

  6. Refine standards for oral and written communication for each grade level that include the systematic study of vocabulary, grammar and mechanics.

  7. Establish courses and expand curricula to prepare students to be contributing members of the world-wide society.
    Ensure that students and staff are proficient in using technologies and educational and communication resources.

  8. Increase critical thinking as a component of all academic courses.

  9. Continue to improve library resources and integrate the use of the library into the curriculum.

  10. Increase writing within all disciplines.

TEACHING GOALS

  1. Institute a program of staff development that concentrates on effective teaching methods and classroom management.

  2. Increase communications early with parents and students to implement corrective measures for academic improvement.

  3. Emphasize the value of mutual respect between school personnel and students for an improved school culture.

FACILITIES ENHANCEMENT GOALS

  1. Prioritize remaining facility repairs and match with resource support (e.g., Cincinnati Public Schools, Walnut Hills High School Association, Alumni Foundation, Fund Raisers) in a project schedule beginning in 2002.

  2. Identify and prioritize major capital projects to bring the entire Walnut Hills High School facility up to the "world class" standard set by the new arts and science center.

MARKETING, COMMUNICATIONS AND RECOGNITION GOALS

  1. Continue marketing and communications campaign to heighten awareness of Walnut Hills' success and opportunities on a local, state and national level.

  2. Expand the opportunities for recognizing and rewarding students and staff for significant contributions leading to innovation and excellence in performance.

  3. Provide for yearly evaluation from the "stakeholder" groups (alumni, parents, teachers, students and staff) to assess progress and communicate results to Walnut Hills constituencies.

  4. Provide feeder schools with the academic expectations integral to student success in a college preparatory program,

  5. To stimulate improved extra curricular and parent programs, issue surveys to participants of existing activities and programs.

SUPPORT SERVICES GOALS

Improve strategies for counselor communication among students, staff, and parents.

Continue to improve the services provided by the College Information Center.

Improve the staffing of health and wellness/welfare services.

Evaluate and improve the study skills program to provide academic and social assistance to seventh grade students experiencing difficulty.
